About Type 1 DiabetesType 1 diabetes, otherwise known as Juvenile Diabetes, is an autoimmune disease in which an individual's pancreas stops producing insulin. Insulin is a naturally occurring hormone secreted by the pancreas that allows the cells of the body to remove and use glucose from the blood. People with Type 1 diabetes need to inject themselves with insulin several times a day or use an insulin pump. Taking insulin is not a cure,it only enables people who have Type 1 to survive.
Type 1 diabetes is most commonly diagnosed from infancy to young adulthood. US News and World Report projects that the number of new cases of Type 1 diabetes for children under five years of age will double by 2020. If left untreated, Type 1 diabetes is fatal.
